Hobbies and Interests

Music

I have played drums in original and cover bands since 1981, notably with Coventry based BAiT between 1996 and 2007.  I also play classical guitar, mandolin and piano and am working on a solo album.  I have a great interest in quality music performed by real musicians.

Badminton I have played badminton since 2002 and play twice a week.
Tennis During the summer months, I often play tennis in addition to badminton.

Skiing

I have had marvelous opportunities to pursue this interest, through school trips and during my time working and studying abroad and continue to ski on an occasional basis.

Computers

I have been involved with computers since 1981.  I have taught myself various computer languages and scripts, including BASIC, HTML, ColdFusion, and javascript, have written several complex programs and dynamic websites,, and am familiar with many types of software, including word processors, spreadsheets and databases.  My career has seen me fully responsible for IT implementation and maintenance at a translation agency.

Languages

As well as being the subject of my studies at university, I thoroughly enjoy learning languages and hope to expand on my knowledge of them in the future.

Politics and History

Studying German and French history and politics has helped me to develop an objective interest in British, European and world politics.

Motorcycling and Driving

I enjoy motorcycling and driving and hold a clean licence.

About My Family and Me

John PortraitFrom humble Yorkshire lad to honorary Midlander, I've been in the making since 1971 and still haven't made it yet.

Born in Bradford in 1971 and raised in the village of Oxenhope in Brontë country, I attended Coventry University between 1990 and 1994, where I studied Modern Languages (German and French as core languages and Russian ab initio), with a third year spent between Potsdam, Germany and Grenoble, France.

I met Emma Paddison in 1993, we married in 1996 and now have two girls, Murron (born 1998) and Philippa (born 2001).

I live in Nuneaton, Warwickshire and am webmaster for a CAD/CAM software company in Coventry. So much for the Modern Languages degree!

I have played the drums since 1981 and was a member of Coventry originals band BAiT between its birth in 1996 and its demise in 2007. I now play classical guitar and mandolin for my own amusement.
